The draw between Marseille and Rennes at the Stade Velodrome ended in controversy after a controversial goal was disallowed.
In the first half, Marseille took the lead through a header from Florian Thauvin, but Rennes equalized just before halftime when Maxence Lestienne scored from outside the box.
The second half saw both teams push for an extra point, but neither team could find the breakthrough.
However, in the 87th minute, Marseille midfielder Anthony Martial scored what appeared to be a stunning strike from outside the penalty area. However, referee Nicolas Goussin waved away the goal on grounds that it had been offside.
Martial later admitted he had made a mistake in his celebration, but insisted that the ball had crossed the line before the referee's decision was announced.
Despite the controversial goal disallowance, Marseille goalkeeper Mathieu Courtois saved a penalty kick in the final minutes to keep his side level.
Both teams have now lost one match each this season, leaving them level on points with Rennes in fourth place in the Ligue 1 table.
It remains to be seen whether this result will affect the outcome of the title race as Marseille and Rennes continue their fight for supremacy in France's top flight.
